Why Custom Fitted In Ear Monitors?

A custom mold to your unique ear allows the in ear monitor to seal properly against the surface of your skin, blocking out any ambient noise that might disrupt you as you try to hear the music. Since every ear a little different, having IEMs custom fitted is the only way to ensure that you’ll truly be able to create that seal. Once any distracting noises are blocked out, you’ll be able to hear every aspect of the music, including heights and bass, the way it was meant to be heard. IF you’re a music enthusiast, this means connecting with the artist and the music like never before. If you’re an artist, this allows you to ensure that your sound is emerging into the world exactly the way you want it to.

How Do Custom Fit IEMs Benefit Musicians?

For aspiring musicians, the importance of a good IEM can’t be overstated. Whether you’re recording in the studio or playing live in front of a rowdy crowd, a custom IEM allows you to truly hear and control your sound. With built in noise isolation and a handcrafted custom fit, these IEMs allow you to clearly hear your mix no matter how loud the venue, and deliver a better performance each time you take the stage.

The process of having a custom in ear monitor fitted and made is much simpler than you may think, and on average takes less than a month. To learn more about the process of having an IEM made, click here. If you want to learn more about our complete custom in-ear monitor line-up, click here.

Brief History of the IEM

JH AUDIO_HISTORY_LOGO

With the invention and subsequent popularity of the microphone came a whole new world of possibilities for musicians. It was the microphone that gave rock and rollers the sound potential to play for crowds of thousands. But as you could probably guess, with bigger crowds came bigger noise. And with the growing noise, a rock stars’ worst dream was realized – they couldn’t hear their own music when on stage. Wedge monitors, which are basically on-stage speakers positioned to allow performers to hear their music, alleviated the issue to some degree. But at the end of the day, it was just more noise added to the mix. Thus, the In Ear Monitor was invented, forever changing the course of stage performance.

jhaudio_iem_monitors

In the mid 60’s, the earliest versions of the In Ear Monitor were developed, an invention credited by some to a Mr. Stephen Ambrose. In the early years, as IEMs were coming in to their own, they were a luxury reserved for the elite. These bad boys were a huge leap for musical technology – they provided a custom source of sound for musicians on stage (without adding to the noise) while doubling as ear plugs. From modest beginnings, these little gadgets have come to shape the way the world interacts with music. They laid the foundation for the modern day earbuds and personal music players.

Over the next few decades, these modestly sized buds came to be quite advanced – even to the point of honing technology that can prevent damage to the ears. Jerry Harvey served as sound engineer to the stars… rock stars that is. Including such rock icons as Van Halen, Kiss, Morrissey, and Motley Crue. Then, in 1995 While on tour with Van Halen, the band challenged their sound engineer, Jerry Harvey, to make their in-ear monitors better. Jerry invented a series of customized dual-speaker in-ear monitors and completely changed the live music industry.

Today, the Jerry Harvey Audio name is synonymous with high quality components and beautifully hand crafted in ear monitors. Beloved by the best sound engineers and used by the most iconic artists and musicians in music, Jerry Harvey Audio is the industry standard to hear no evil.

We spend countless hours researching, testing, and designing our products, to deliver an exceptional user interaction. But it’s not just the musicians we have in mind. In addition to our premier in-ear monitors, we offer the crown jewel of custom earplugs.

Perfect for anyone working in loud environments who hope to retain some level of comfort while on the job, our soft custom earplugs are made-to-order and fit the exact shape of your ears by using the same ear mold process we use for our IEMs. We want you to be able to hear the best quality in sound for years to come.

  • Custom fit means they’re built for your ears and offer the highest level of comfort a pair of earplugs can provide.
  • Connected by a lightweight, plastic chord so your earplugs can be spared from pocket lint and hang conveniently around your neck, easily accessible for use.
  • Offering an average of -26db of isolation, your ears will be sufficiently protected during long exposure to loud music.

If you’re looking for any more motivation to treat your ears to these custom beauties, feel free to read Todd Owyoung’s extensive review of the JH Audio Custom Earplugs. Todd is a New York City based music photographer, internationally published and specializing in live music events. This guy photographs an average of 100 shows a year – meaning he hears a lot of loud music. He’s worn earplugs to almost every show he’s photographed for the last 5 years. Check out his full review HERE.

Here are some of the awesome words Todd had to say about the JH Audio Custom Earplugs…

I will take the maximum amount of decibel reduction I can cram into my ears. With that respect, the -26dB attenuation of the JH Audio ‘plugs sounded like music to my ears.”

“As a result, JH Audio’s custom earplugs are extremely comfortable even for extended use. Hours of wear are not an issue with these custom molded earplugs. They’re as good for music festivals as they are for individual concerts.”

“After using the JH Audio Custom Earplugs for over a year, I am still flat out thrilled with them. Simply, I don’t think I will – or can – go back to regular earplugs ever again. They are just that awesome.”

With two style options- the soft clear or the soft with faceplate color, you can keep your style and protect your hearing. From the loud music junkies to the construction worker- protect your hears to hear no evil.

Product Spotlight: The Ambient FR

Some artists prefer not to be isolated -26db from the stage and audience. For this simple reason, Jerry Harvey developed the Ambient FR. With just -15dB of isolation, there is plenty of room to hear what’s happening on the stage and what’s happening in the audience.

Zella_Day_AmbientFR

Zella Day’s Custom Ambient FR

When it comes to the artist experience on stage, sometimes it isn’t just about hearing– it’s about FEELING the stage. These are an innovative, beautifully crafted and state of the art in ear monitor that has set yet another new industry standard. Raising the bar and going beyond the expectations of its users, the Ambient FR is the first full range response ambient IEM that offers the proper level of attenuation without shrinking the frequency range.

Featuring balanced bass tuned for no low-end loss, the Ambient FR allow musicians to preserve the beautiful and delicate connection between the music and the energy of the audience— all while hearing the best audio on the planet.

The Siren Series: Angie

You’ve met Layla and Roxanne- now we reach the third member of The Siren Series, Angie. This masterpiece is named after the Rolling Stones song, “Angie.”

Mick Jagger & Keith Richards - by ©Bettmann/CORBIS

Mick Jagger & Keith Richards – by ©Bettmann/CORBIS

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and recorded in November and December 1972, “Angie” is an acoustic-guitar-driven ballad, which tells of the end of a romance.

Richards, who wrote most of the music and lyrics for the song, claimed in his autobiography that the name Angie was a pseudonym for heroin, and that the song was about his attempt to quit using it while detoxing in Switzerland.

Angie, The Siren Series

Custom Angie IEM

Like all of The Siren Series, Angie is available in a custom as well as universal fit. The custom fit is available to purchase direct from Jerry Harvey Audio. The universal fit, known as the Angie II, is available exclusively through Astell&Kern. The Angie II is also “Full Metal Jacket,” meaning that each body, cap and sound bore are machined from one solid block of titanium with a carbon fiber logo plate insert.

The audio signature is reference quality with the same 4th order crossover network as Layla. Angie’s dual low, dual mid and quad high configuration gives a very accurate representation of what the recording artist and mix engineer intended you to hear. Angie is designed to reach optimum top-end extention with minimal distortion. The mid driver is perfectly flat from 10hz to 5khz and the low driver designed for steeper low pass and with virtualy no distortion. Bass response is perfectly flat when attenuated or up to +10 db of bass boost at 60hz when boosted.

Angie II, The Siren Series

JH Audio/Astell&Kern Universal Angie II IEM

“..as an overall package, the workmanship of the Angie’s form factor is a masterpiece to behold that puts many other top tier IEMs to shame. It is also a testament of what can happen when a company uses its head and designs for the wear and tear of everyday real world use while proving that well-built doesn’t mean an IEM has to look ugly.” – Arlindo Borges, http://www.headphone.guru

RoXanne_Hanging
“Audiophiles like to toss around the word “transparency” to describe high levels of clarity to the sound of their components, speakers, and headphones, and now I’m going to do it with the Roxanne. Its transparency exceeds all other in-ear headphones I’ve heard, and I’ve heard most of the world’s best in-ear headphones.”
